Sleep It Off
Genre: Pop Punk
Hometown: San Diego, California
How did you become a band?
Our guitarist (Nolan) and I linked up from the local scene. We played shows together with past projects. Nolan posted online about wanting to start a new project. Not long after I went to his studio and we wrote our first single. The rest is history.
Where did the name of the band originate from?
We could really relate to the saying. Having so much anxiety and stress about life, that you just want to sleep the time away. We thought it sounded really cool, so we went with it!
Can you tell us about the band’s lineup? Who’s who?
Gabe Gonzales (vocals)
Nolan Albright (guitar/backing vocals)
AJ Loera (guitar)
Jay Wildes (bass)
Danny Penwell (drums)
Individually, can you tell us what your favourite part about being a band is?
My favourite part of being in a band is the writing process. I love writing awesome vocal and guitar parts, and seeing the whole song come together. I also love spending time with all of my bandmates, and just talking about everything and anything.
Individually, can you tell us what the biggest misconception people have about being in a band?
I think that being in a band is extremely expensive and time consuming. I don’t think people get how much money you need to spend to just record and practice, to make essentially nothing in return. You really have to love doing it.
Can you give us an overview of the band’s discography?
In late 2019, we released our first single titled ‘Over It’. By January 2020, we released our second single ‘Holding On’. In June 2020, we released our third single ‘Confidence Fades’. The following month, August, we released our fourth single ‘Normal Heights’. We recently put out an acoustic version of ‘Normal Heights’.
What sets you apart from all the other bands in the genre?
I think what sets us apart is the fact that we aren’t fully constrained to a genre. We have elements of mid 2000’s post-hardcore, modern pop punk, 90’s pop punk and alternative rock. We love bands we grew up on, and we feel like that sound shows in our music.
Can you tell us about the band’s future plans?
We plan to continue putting out a few new singles in 2021. We have a handful of new songs written, and we have planned to potentially group them as an album. We hope to play shows as soon as safely possible, but until then, we will write as much music as we can.
